At the end of June I took a trip with Yeongmi and Joan to New York City for the Eastern Economics Association Meetings. The meetings went well. I gave a paper and one of my students from BYU presented another. Both on economic inequality, BTW.
But here is the travel report!
Day 1 - Feb 25 & 26
This counts as one day because we took a red eye flight from Salt Lake and arrived at Kennedy around 6:00 a.m. We took a cab from the airport to the conference hotel, the Sheraton Time Square, and dropped our luggage off there because it was too early to check in. We ate a horribly-overpriced breakfast buffet at the hotel and then hit the road.
First we walked down to Time Square and eventually found a place to trade in our vouchers for the Hop-on Hop-off bus. We rode this to the Empire State Building first. We had also purchased 3-day New York Passes and most of what we did was included in the pass. From there we continued to Downtown getting off at Battery Park and taking the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. It was quite cold and getting a bit late so we skipped Ellis Island and rode the bus back to the hotel where we all collapsed and fell asleep early since no one really slept on the flight.
Day 2 - February 27
I spent all day at the conference doing my job of disseminating knowledge. Yeongmi and Joan rode the Hoho bus again, this time northward around Central Park. We met a couple of my former students from BYU who are now in grad school at NYU for dinner at the Shake Shake near the Natural History Museum. I had a great time catching up with them.
Day 3 - Feb. 28
In the morning we walked to Rockefeller Center and took a tour. I love it. We had a great guide who knew a lot about the history of the art incorporated into the architecture. Afterward we walked back to Time's Square and went through Madame Tussauds Wax Museaum, and the Body Work exhibit at Discovery Place. Then we went on a fun bus ride/street art performance ride called simply, The Ride. We all a loved that it was lots of fun. We ended the evening with the City Lights ride on the HoHo Bus.
