Cleaning Old Slides

I have spent the past several months scanning old slides that were taken by my father and grandfather.  Some of the loose older slides were very dirty and smudged.  I originally scanned these "as is", but after some reading online decided to try cleaning them up.  I used a spray bottle with 99.5% pure alcohol and some microfiber cloths.  The images below show the before and after photos.

In some cases, the dirt or oil was pretty hard and it took a bit of wiping to remove it.  Unfortunately, this sometimes also removed the emulsion from the film and degraded the image.  This is particularly true for slides that were already overexposed and had little emulsion left to begin with.

In other cases the dirt or oil came off quite easily with just a quick swipe.  Those slides show markedly better results.

This one took a bit of wiping, but still turned out better.

This one is much better.

This one shows a small loss of detail where the film was over exposed.

Same here

This one lost a lot of detail.
This one too

Also this one

This one lost detail as well.

This one is much better.

As is this one

And this one

This one too

This is a bit of a mixed bag

This one and the next were underexposed.  The differences are due more to different adjustments in Photoshop than to cleaning.
